Your Face Says It All

Have you noticed? Every jack-o-lantern has its own attitude.  Even the ceramic ones.  A friendly smile or a spooky snarl–the expression changes everything.

Your face says everything about your attitude, too.  Research shows that we trust your sincerity by reading your expression, body language and tone of voice.  If

you have the distracted look of a multi-tasker or the scowl of self-obsession, you look like one of the mean pumpkins in the neighborhood.  But, when you make the emotional investment of engaging with people and the work you do, you elevate the energy in the room.

The practice of decorating jack-o’-lanterns originated in Ireland, where the early lanterns were carried at night to scare away the bad spirits.  Notice how you carryyour face throughout the day—and in meetings.  Is your brow furrowed?  Are you frowning in distraction? In those moments, re-engage with people.  Get some positive attitude on your face, or you’ll scare away the good spirits.
