“I just have to do something,” Andrew said when he called, “I’ve hit bottom with avoiding invitations to speak publicly.”
Andrew was a highly respected attorney. When we met he explained that he had turned down an invitation from a colleague to speak at a prestigious event, giving the excuse that he would be out of town that week. As luck would have it, he saw his friend in the produce section of the grocery store the night before the event and had to dodge him.
“I felt like a fool,” Andrew said, “Here I am a grown man, at the height of my career, diving behind the bananas.”
We had a good laugh and talked about the irrational voice that tells us we’re going to risk exposure if we stand to speak. Andrew said, “It’s absolutely crazy, but I’m afraid ‘they’ are going to find out I don’t know what I’m talking about!” All of us who’ve experienced the Impostor Syndrome are in good company. Some of the most famous among us feel they have managed to fool people.
“The exaggerated esteem in which my lifework is held makes me very ill at ease. I feel compelled to think of myself as an involuntary swindler.” —Albert Einstein
Andrew signed up for a learning experience at Interact Studio. We coached him through the process of standing on his feet and owning both his story and his space—something he does on a regular basis today. He left me a voicemail one night saying, “I just wanted you to know—I spoke to a group of my peers tonight. I was able to show up and share the value of my experience. It was exhilarating.”
