Don’t Take Short Cuts in Presentation Planning

It was painful.  I watched my over-confident friend Chris ramble, fidget and clear his throat while running his first non-profit Board Meeting as president.

“Ahhhmm. Uh, let’s see—let’s start with, well I guess we should cover agenda…” he hesitated.  This was a high-stakes opportunity to show up with credibility and command, and he was blowing it.

Earlier that week I asked if he needed any help preparing, and Chris said with a wink, “Nah, I’m better when I wing it!  I’ll just be authentic!”

Fred Astaire would have taken issue with Chris. Authentic does not mean unprepared.

Astaire was the legendary dancer who revolutionized dance in America. He was known for a fierce commitment to practice–he said he practiced so that he could dance in a meaningful way without thinking about the steps.
